Dr. Young received a bachelors degree in Psychology from Florida State University, where she minored in Family and Child Sciences. During her undergraduate studies she also served as a research assistant with one of the Nations leading experts on suicide, Dr. Thomas Joiner. Committed to service and helping others overcome challenges with their mental health, she volunteered her time as a Crisis Counselor for a local suicide hotline TCRS (Telephone Counseling and Referral Services) and the homeless services center. Dr. Young later received a Masters in Mental Health Counseling and Education from the University of Central Florida, during which time she interned and worked at a local mental health clinic and Baker Act receiving facility with individuals with severe and persistent mental health conditions. Her expertise in the field of psychology and mental health is vast and extends beyond the classroom. She has gained years of experience working directly with and within the communities of the clients she serves, from the migrant and indigenous communities, homeless shelters and prisons, k-8 centers and institutions of higher learning, the list goes on, driven by her need to “know”.
Dr. Young received her doctoral degree from Barry University in Counselor Education, with a specialty in Marriage, Family and Couples Therapy. Her dissertation focused on mental health counselors’ perception of recovery from schizophrenia. Her research in this area has helped to enhance her clinical outlook.
